They portrayed how the artwork symbolized all that they found important and strategic in creating a “lure” publication that looked “inviting” to the vacationers’ eye. They were impressed with the publication and could not say enough about its professional appearance.

Quest Art Adds New Workshops for its 2013 Adult Programs

Quest Art is introducing new workshops for its 2013 Adult Education Program.

Appealing to the curious and the beginner, January and February workshops include Yoga and Colour Appreciation with Lisa O’Driscoll of the Yoga House on Thursday afternoons starting Jan. 17 from 2 to 3 p.m. It is $105 for seven sessions. Open Studio will be on Mondays, starting Jan. 14. Open Studio is an opportunity to experience an open studio concept. Students will work in a comfortable, relaxed and friendly environment whether you bring pastels, other drawing or painting materials, discuss and share techniques or work independently in a well-lit space. A facilitator will be available to assist. Open Studio is three hours from 1 to 4 p.m. and it is pay-what-you-can.

Introduction to Weaving will enable students to experiment with the interplay of colour, structure and texture using table looms, which are threaded and ready to weave. The steps required to set up a loom will be demonstrated, allowing students to appreciate the full process of weaving from beginning to end.  This adult workshop is being taught by members of the Huronia Handweavers Guild (HHG). Instructors are Carolyn Houlden, Margaret Killing and Mary Besley. The class starts on Jan. 26. Only 10 spots are available.

On Wednesday, Feb. 13 from 1 to 4 p.m. Polly Sharp will lead the Sculptural Needle Felting workshop. The popularity of this art form is sweeping the world. Nearly anything that one can imagine can be created from wool using only single barbed felting needles. Students will learn to mold in wool a colourful character and also ‘paint’ a landscape.

Brian Burnett returns with Capturing Copeland Creek on Saturday, Feb. 23 and Sunday, Feb. 24.  This two-day workshop is suitable for entry level to advanced painting students who have a sense of adventure. The course will cover outdoor photography, digital processing/printing and finally painting. The images captured on the wilderness walk through the Copeland Creek area will form the foundation and image reference for student’s paintings. Interpretation of the images and experience can be translated from realism to abstraction, in either acrylic or oil paints.

In the spring Quest Art will also be offering classes in drawing, painting, printmaking and digital arts.

Penetang Foodland Christmas Food Drive Saturday December 8, 2012

Good morning folks, just an fyi the good people at the Penetang Foodland under the direction of Doug and Lena McLaren will be running a Christmas Food Drive in support of the Foodland/Sobeys Store owners across Ontario Guinness World record food drive attempt.

This event runs for 24 hours this saturday and is being assisted by emergency services personnel from the Penetanguishene area including officers from Southern Georgian Bay Detachment, the OPP Auxiliary Unit and OPP Offender Transport Unit.

A partnership has also been established with the Penetanguishene Rotary Club to assist in financial support and also Rotarians will be on hand to assist as well.

The local St. Vincent de Paul will be the receiver of the food stuffs raised from the food drive at the Penetang Foodland. 

Should you be inclined to donate to the food drive we will be happy to assist you! Hope to see you there.

Quest Art Seeking Artists Province Wide

Quest Art Seeking Artists Province Wide

Quest Art is seeking new, emerging or established visual artists interested in participating in its 9^th Annual Juried Art Show, which will take place March 8 until May 4, 2013.

This is an open call to all Ontario based artists working in any medium.

This year’s juried categories include Two-dimensional work, Three-dimensional work, Photography and People’s Choice.

Monetary prizes of $200 for first place and $150 for second will be awarded in each of the categories. The recipient of the People’s Choice Award will receive $150.

Deadline for Applications is 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, 2013.

Works will be juried by CD/DVD. Up to two original works can be submitted for jurying and must have been created in the last 12 months.

There is a non-refundable application fee of $30 payable to Quest Art.

Applications can be dropped off at Quest Art in the Midland Cultural Centre or mailed to Quest Art, 333 King Street, Midland, ON L4R 3M7, Attention Juried Art Show.

The 9^th Annual Juried Art Show opening reception and awards presentation will take place on Friday, March 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Midland Cultural Centre.

“First Light” at Sainte-Marie will enchant visitors with 5,000 candles

“First Light” at Sainte-Marie

will enchant visitors with 5,000 candles

 

A “Top 100” Event in Ontario, Sainte-Marie’s spectacular “First Light” returns for its 13^th year the evenings of November 29^th, 30^th, and December 1^st. 

The signature feature of First Light is the illumination of the historic site by candlelight.  The First Light event began at Sainte-Marie 13 years ago with 1,000 candles; this year the number of candles has been increased to 5,000 creating a magical ambience. Attendance at First Light has grown from 1,000 visitors since inception to over 6,000 visitors in 2012.

Beautiful lantern-lit paths lead to a variety of fun family activities.   Upon entering the historic site, visitors will encounter the popular “Survival In The Bush” historical encampment at the main gates. In the Jesuit Residence, children can write with quill pens as they prepare their very own seasonal messages, and fun take-home bracelets can be made in Sainte-Marie’s carpenter shop.  In the Cookhouse 15,000 gingerbread and lavender treats made by the Grade 9 and 10 culinary class from St. Theresa’s High School in Midland from historic recipes will be available for sampling.  Festival du Loup and La Clé d’la Baie will offer a “Fleur de lys” key ring craft in the En Colombage building.

The sounds of musket drill will punctuate the night courtesy of re-enactor group La Compagnie Franche de la Marine who will also be serving hot chocolate.  In the Sainte-Marie foyer, little folks will love making a seasonal craft offered from The Métis Nation of Ontario, fashioning delightful corn husk dolls, and creating a special Angel ornament at the Discovery Harbour table.

Music has always been a crowd pleaser at First Light, and this year’s event will provide a wonderful mix of performers.  NEW this year will be the four-part a cappella troupe The Rhyming Couplets that will wander through the historic site filling the air with seasonal melodies.  Vince Therrien will present historic French and English music and local artist Michel Payment will share his inspiring songs in the Sainte-Marie Chapel.  Amidst the lively atmosphere of a French Café at Restaurant Sainte-Marie, toe-tapping entertainment will be provided by La Famille Lefaive and Jill et les Bucherons.  In Sainte-Marie’s famous longhouses, the Christian Island Drum Group and John Somosi will thrill audiences with their First Nations drumming, chanting, and singing.  A total of 13 choirs including 8 school groups will also perform at the event over three evenings, including the return of The Children’s Community Choir from Penetanguishene and the OPP Chorus. 

For everyone who would like to do some early Christmas shopping, 20 exceptional artisans will be in the Sainte-Marie Museum and the Sainte-Marie gift shop will be open each night.

The magical “First Light” event will be presented at Sainte-Marie among the Hurons evenings November 29, 30, and December 1 from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.  Admission is just $8.00 per person with a non-perishable food item that will be donated to the local Salvation Army food bank.  Children ages 5 and under are free. Please be advised that with the exception of service animals, pets are not

allowed on the historic site for this event.  Overflow parking will be available at Doral

Industries, 100 Wye Valley Road.  Free shuttle buses will run to Sainte-Marie throughout

each evening.

Overnight packages are available from the Midland Super 8 Hotel starting at $125.00 per night based on double occupancy. Package includes 1 night accommodation, entrance to First Light event, and a complimentary breakfast.  Persons must be 19 years of age or older.

Waypoint's Outpatient Services is on the Move!

Waypoint’s Outpatient Services is on the move to a new one-floor, fully accessible building located on the grounds of the Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH) Midland site. The move to the empty building formerly used by the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit allows Waypoint to realize a long standing dream of an accessible location for clients. With a future 20-bed Schedule 1 acute mental health unit planned for GBGH, the new location is ideal and will provide close access and opportunities for patients transitioning to community services.

The Outpatient Program serves people from the community who need varying levels of mental health support. The services are geared to supporting clients and their families in managing their illness and continuing on the recovery journey. The inter-professional team includes psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, an occupational therapist, community support staff, peer supporters and administrative support.

The program will be closed for services for the next couple of days as they are busy packing and moving, but will be re-open for regular business on Tuesday November 15, 2012. Their phone number remains the same but they will have new physical and mailing addresses.

Quest Art Steamroller Prints Auction

Quest Art is having an auction - all for a great cause.

Quest Art is displaying original artwork as part of its Steamroller Prints Auction at the Midland Cultural Centre, The Library Restaurant and Grounded Coffee Company.

Some of our community artists created original wood cut blocks, which they printed with the Town of Midland’s asphalt roller during Artwalk 2012. These prints are now up for auction until Friday, Nov. 23.

People are encouraged to place a bid in person today at the Quest Art Shop (333 King Street) located in the Midland Cultural Centre. Proceeds raised from this auction directly benefit Quest Art’s education programs.

Artistic Dimensions has offered a 20% discount on framing for any of the prints purchased.

The prints will be on display in the Atrium Gallery on Thursday, Nov. 22 and Friday, Nov. 23 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Bidding will close at 8:30 p.m. the Friday.

The Steamroller Prints Auction coincides with the Brookside Concert featuring Red Chamber at the Midland Cultural Centre on Nov. 23.

In collaboration with Brookside, if anyone places a bid before Nov. 23 they can purchase a Brookside Concert ticket for that evening at the Midland Cultural Centre reception desk for $15 instead of a regular price of $25.
