JACK GRANATSTEIN TO SPEAK AT HURONIA MUSEUM

Huronia Museum is delighted to have Jack Granatstein join the community for the museum's annual Heritage Dinner
on May 2nd, 2014 5:30 pm as guest speaker. In commemoration of the start of World War I, Jack Granatstein will
share his current work on the last 100 days of World War I, its losses and the unbelievable impact these days
had on Canada.
Jack Granatstein is a keeper of Canadian history. He writes on 20th Century Canadian national history--the military,
defence and foreign policy, Canadian-American relations, the public service, and politics. He has been described as
“the most prolific Canadian historian of his generation” with more than 60 titles to his credit. However, for many
Canadians, Jack Granatstein is best known for his television and radio work. He provided the historical
commentary for CBC-TV's coverage of the 50th, 60th, and 65th anniversaries of D-Day, V-E Day, V-J Day,
the 90th anniversary of Vimy Ridge, and repeated Remembrance Day ceremonies alongside Peter
Mansbridge.
This is a fundraising dinner to support the Huronia Museum, a not-for-profit charity which actively pursues heritage
preservation activities in the region. This event is a sit-down and served dinner, prepared by ELM catering along
with silent auctions and dessert auctions taking place.
Tickets are $75 with a $40 tax receipt available.

Discovery Harbour’s 200th Year Celebrations - Yarn Bombing!

Discovery Harbour is looking for volunteer knitters of all ages & skill levels for a really fun “Yarn Bombing” event  of the site (the 1^st in Ontario!) taking place this summer as part of Discovery Harbour’s 200^th Anniversary celebrations.  Wool will be supplied and all creations will be re-cycled into blankets for shelters and emergency responders when the event is over at the end of the season.   An information meeting is planned at Sainte-Marie among the Hurons on Wednesday, April 2 at 1:30 p.m.  To attend please contact Betty Gillan at 705 528-7691 or email betty.gillan@ontario.ca   Yarn generously donated by Spinrite ® LP.

MLI - Muskoka Language International brings international students to small towns and cities across Canada. 
This spring, they are bringing a group of Japanese students to Penetanguishene from March 24, 2014 until June 15, 2014 and they are urgently looking for local families who would be interested in hosting!

The students are from the Nagoya Women’s College High School in Japan. They are 15-16 year old girls, who will be attending Penetanguishene Secondary School during the day.
This is a wonderful opportunity to learn from another culture, make new friends and share your Canadian hospitality!
The students require 3 meals a day and a private room. We are looking to place one student per family. Compensation is provided.

Media Release - Quest Art Inviting Artists to Participate in Exhibitions

The New Year holds multiple opportunities for artists to display their works of art at Quest Art School and Gallery.

The first exhibition of 2014 in the Atrium Gallery is Pedagogy: Classroom to Gallery.  This exhibition is open to those who have taken a Quest Art workshop within the last two years, including children and teens.

A maximum of two works can be submitted and they must have been created during, or inspired by, the Quest Art workshop.

“This exhibition marries the two main components of Quest Art’s programming which are visual arts workshops and exhibition opportunities for all ages and skill levels,” said Karen Mealing, Quest Art’s operations coordinator. 

Works in the Pedagogy exhibition do not need to be framed, nor do they need to be for sale.  Those interested in submitting work for consideration for display must deliver their pieces to Quest Art on Jan. 13 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The exhibition, sponsored by the County of Simcoe, takes place from Jan. 17 to March 1, with an opening reception on Jan. 17 from 7 to 9 p.m.

Quest Art has also issued an open call to Canadian artists working in any visual arts medium for their 10^th Annual Juried Art Show.

This year the panel of jurors includes internationally-known artist John Hartman, Matthew Macintosh, curator at the Orillia Museum of Art and History, and Luci Dilkus, a textile artist and owner of Le Studio Gallery.

Artists may enter a maximum of two submissions for the jurors’ consideration.

The entry fee is $30 per artist and the jurors’ will award three awards of $200 each and at the end of the exhibition a $100 People’s Choice award will be presented.

The deadline for applications is Feb. 3 and the exhibition takes place from March 7 to Apr. 26.  The opening reception and awards presentation will take place on March 7 from 7 to 9 p.m.

Wye Marsh December Events
